Clothes make the man, or, in this case, the audition. Luckily, the rules of the wardrobe haven’t changed drastically since the switch to Zoom. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t always refresh your knowledge of how to dress for audition success.

Craft the Color

Avoid grays, browns, golds, oranges, and yellows. Those colors hardly enhance your natural skin tone and often pull focus away from your face. Instead, find a color that makes you look even better. Remember, you’re the one making the statement, not your clothes. Jewel tones typically look the best, such as emeralds and sapphires.

Plain but Pretty

Avoid busy patterns, garish colors, reds, and logos unless asked otherwise. Bright colors typically soak up any lighting you have, pulling it away from your face. Reds are bad because the color looks different in every camera, sometimes coming out orange. Logos and patterns are simply busy and distracting.

Know the Neck

It’s rarely talked about but is very important. Your neckline is a huge part of how your face and neck are framed. Collars and V-necks are ideal because they provide an interesting shape without distorting your natural proportions. Turtlenecks are bad because they make you seem like you have something to hide and cowl-necks distort your neck.

Keep Conservative

Unless you are specifically asked to show off some skin or a bit of cleavage, dress conservatively. At best, it’s just distracting, at worst it can be interpreted in a number of negative ways by the casting crew.

Avoid Accessories

Necklaces, bangles, and other accessories only serve as distractions, drawing the eye to them rather than your face. On top of that, you never know if a piece of jewelry will catch the light just enough to provide your audience with an annoying refraction.
