It’s the hottest tip you can get to better your auditions: be confident! But not all of us were born with an innate sense of confidence. Some of us don’t even know what that means. How do you even begin to figure out how to do away with self-doubt and believe in your own abilities?
Define
Self-doubt is nothing more than lacking belief in yourself. You feel inadequate, incompetent, or unacceptable. It’s important to understand this definition because by assigning reason to it, we begin to separate those emotions that lead to this belief, allowing us to start down the path toward confident auditions.
Journal
Each day, spend some time writing in a journal. It shouldn’t be anything more than your thoughts about the day or what’s on your mind currently. Write until you feel that your thoughts have been satisfactorily put on the page. Now read over it and pay attention to where your negative thoughts begin to intrude. This helps you separate those negative feelings from the actual truth.
Meditate
If journaling is the separation, meditation is the managing. Through meditation, you learn to allow negative feelings and thoughts to pass by so that you can then grab on to the positive ideas that make up confidence. Instead of focusing on the one line you could never remember correctly, you now use the knowledge of your hours of rehearsal to drive you to a stunning performance.
Practice
Don’t just practice for practice’s sake. That kind of mindless work doesn’t lead to improvement. Instead, each time you practice, learn how to identify what you want to change and how you want to change it. This amount of agency allows for noted improvement that then results in the killer confidence casting directors search for.
